MiReCC Project: Post-mining landscape restoration begins at CXI

On Tuesday, April 28, 2026, an informal meeting of representatives from institutions involved in the project “Reclamation of Mining Heritage under Climate Change Conditions” (MiReCC) took place at the Institute of Nanomaterials, Advanced Technologies, and Innovation (CXI) at the Technical University of Liberec. The project is being implemented under the Interreg Saxony–Czech Republic 2021–2027 cross-border program, Priority 2: Climate Change and Sustainability.

The main purpose of this meeting was for the partners to get to know each other and clarify their key tasks. The lead partner is the Technical University of Liberec. The collaborating entities are the Czech Geological Survey, which provides the national geological service in the Czech Republic, and the Saxon company G.E.O.S. Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH, specializing in geology, energy, the environment and underground engineering.

The project focuses on the historical impacts of mining in the Ore Mountains, where mine water, seepage from waste dumps
and dust can release contaminants into the environment. These processes are also strongly influenced by the water balance and ongoing climate change.

The goal of the project is to develop innovative solutions for existing mine site reclamation strategies
under changing climatic conditions. This includes, for example, bioremediation based on microbial activity or passive wetland concepts for water treatment.

The project combines cross-border data collection, modeling, pilot experiments, and expert workshops. The output will be a final bilingual strategy for the management of mine sites, the results of which will be shared on an ongoing basis with both experts and the general public.
